Everything you need to know about online notarization
What is Remote Online Notarization (RON)?
Remote Online Notarization, or RON, allows you to have documents notarized over a live video call with a commissioned notary public. Instead of traveling to a notary's office, you connect through a secure platform from your computer or phone. The notary verifies your identity through knowledge-based authentication (KBA) and a photo ID check, witnesses your signature electronically, and applies a tamper-evident digital seal — all in a recorded session that creates a permanent audit trail.
Is online notarization legal?
Yes. As of 2026, 48 states and Washington D.C. have enacted laws authorizing Remote Online Notarization. RON-notarized documents are legally equivalent to traditionally notarized documents under the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN Act) and the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA). They are accepted by courts, government agencies, financial institutions, title companies, county recorders, and other official entities.
How is my identity verified?
Notara uses multi-factor identity verification that exceeds the security of traditional in-person notarization. First, you present a valid government-issued photo ID on camera. Then you complete knowledge-based authentication (KBA) — a series of questions generated from your personal credit and public record history that only you would know. The notary also performs a visual comparison of your ID to your live appearance. This three-layer approach dramatically reduces the risk of identity fraud compared to a traditional notary who simply looks at your ID.
What makes Notara different?
Notara is built on DocIntel™, our proprietary document intelligence engine that uses AI to analyze, extract, and validate document information before your notarization session. This means faster sessions, fewer errors, and a more secure process. Unlike other platforms, Notara was built from the ground up for the AI era — not retrofitted from legacy notarization software.
